92Y:
Bach’s The Art of the fUgue Set Design
TYPE Performance Art Installation
LOCATION New York City, NY
CLIENT 92Y Cultural Center
EVENT DATE Jan 26 - Feb 6, 2016
Presented as part of the 92Y Seeing Music Festival in New York, this installation by Gabriel Calatrava explores the relationship between sound, movement, and visual form. Designed to accompany a live performance by the Brentano String Quartet of Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of the Fugue, the piece translates musical structure into a dynamic spatial experience
Operated by a dance ensemble, the installation consists of an array of tensioned strings that continuously shift through choreographed movements. Inspired by fugal composition, instrument strings, and the interlacing logic of Cat’s Cradle, the system evolves through patterns of crossing, stretching, and compression. The result is a performative environment that visualizes the complexity of Bach’s music, offering audiences a layered and immersive interpretation where architecture, music, and choreography converge.
