UPSTATE “WINDMILL” HOUSE
TYPE Residential
PROGRAM Master suite, 2 guest bedrooms, living/dining area, entertainment area, library, office, floating catwalk.
LOCATION Catskill Mountains, New York
The Upstate House is a private residence organized as an offset cross, set within the scenic, densely forested Catskills region of Upstate New York. Conceived as a playful exploration of opacity and indoor–outdoor living, the project is designed to fully engage its surrounding landscape. Circulation and communal spaces are anchored at the center, organized around a sculptural spiral stair capped by a skylight. More private functions, such as bedrooms, are positioned at the termini of each wing, ensuring both privacy and acoustic separation.
The structure is composed of sustainable CLT heavy timber, while the exterior is clad in horizontal clapboard and a gridded roof system that transitions toward the center into a glass-backed assembly. This layered condition acts as a rhythmic sun-shading device, producing a dynamic interplay of light and shadow within the interior. On the second level, sky bridges span between two of the wings, accommodating a secluded office and library.
